There are two kinds of recommended maps, "ROAD ATLAS JAPAN" and "TOURING MAPPLE". I recommend you to have both of them.

"ROAD ATLAS JAPAN"

Published by Shobunsha Publications,Inc. Scale: 1:250,000 Price: 3,000 yen (Apr. 30, 2005) It is written in both western alphabets and Japanese. But it has few informations of campsite, youth hostels, etc., not like "TOURING MAPPLE" (see below).

These are best road maps for cycle touring.
They consist of 7 volumes by region. They have useful information of graphical icons; campsites, youth hostels, accommodations, public bath, view points, convenience store, etc.(see below). Of course they have distances, contour lines, etc.. They update information in every year. So texts are written only in Japanese (Major cities are written in English), but the information of the icons in the map are worth for having.
If you can read Japanese, you don't have to have "ROAD ATLAS JAPAN".

The borders of this cover area map are very rough. Each mapple's cover area overlaps each other.
